Are Walking Vacations Good For Your Health?
Introducing the walking vacations idea! Come on now!
Step on up. Don't you go thinking of sore feet or aching muscles.
Think of it this way...
You finally reach the top. Before you started your walking vacation, no
one - not even you - thought you would go any higher than your hotel room
on the third floor. But you did. What an accomplishment. What a great
medicine for your self-esteem!
Yes, this was a serious piece of information for
me - I was surprised when I read about the connection between walking and
diabetes (of all diseases).
Walking Vacations Have Medicinal Value
Recently, I read an article that tells how simple walking is a way
to prevent diseases such as diabetes. Diabetes! Did you get that?
The article, called "Walking: Miracle Medicine", states how a 1999
study showed that you can actually prevent the development of diabetes if
you walk regularly. Further, those who already have the disease can control
it by walking.
So how does walking help you avoid this debilitating disease
OR put you in control if you are diabetic?
"Walking reduces your risk of diabetes by helping your body use the
natural anti-diabetes hormone, insulin, more efficiently and effectively."
Why Should You Walk on Your Vacation?
It is typical with organizations that offer packages in walking
vacations that you have a guide - someone who knows the course. These
adventures are often conducted in groups, for example
Cross Country
International Walking Vacations.
Now, why is this important? You know t his is a
fact....
You cannot just walk once a year and reap the rich benefits from your
walking vacation. You need to develop a walking lifestyle... rather a
habit of walking. Yes, you need to!
Every year, millions of people resolve to lose weight, break a bad
habit, or reach any of the myriad of other personal goals. Even with high
technology gadgets in weight loss and fitness centers today, more than 20%
will quit within 6 weeks.
Walking vacations are great for the following reasons:
-
You get to create your momentous launch of the adventure you wish
would become your lifestyle. Hey, take it from me, a former educator...
There is nothing more impressive than starting a habit with a bang. You
will always be inspired by the tremendous initial experience.
-
On a walking vacation, your guide is your mentor and inspiration.
The tour guide will also give historical or other information on the
tour. It's educational.
-
You can choose your own place to have your walks. A
camping trip to the mountains or
national parks, for example. This can be a very low-cost option that
is just as effective as expensive exotic destinations.
Today's fast pace and hectic lifestyle is certainly damaging to our
health. Many people do take vacation, but this is often dubbed "time for
relaxation". Many people already lead sedentary lifestyles. Why not a
walking vacation?
